Three Mills to Canary Wharf - Saturday 9 December 11am

Canary Wharf is becoming an increasingly visited part of London’s geography. This walking tour is a chance to explore and understand the historic and changing context in which it sits.

Beginning near the historic Three Mills conservation area, on the River Lea, it follows the riverbank down to Bow Locks and the Limehouse Cut, then winds its way through residential Poplar and past the iconic postwar developments of the Lansbury Estate and  Balfron Tower, before emerging suddenly onto Poplar Dock and the commercial towers of Canary Wharf. The tour ends at the shortly to open Crossrail Station, whose rooftop winter garden is already accessible to the public.

Your guide is Ralph Ward, who has worked on the planning and development of the area for over twenty years, most recently as Olympic planning and regeneration advisor for the Department for Communities and Local Government. He is now visiting professor at the University of East London.

Meet: Carmelite Cafe at the Nunnery Gallery 181 Bow Rd, London E3 2SJ
